The open and accepting community, because it allows for all people to be […] who they are.

If you could change one thing about Graceland, what would it be and why?
I would create huge residence halls where all of the guys were in one building and all of the girls in another, with a large connected common area in each so that more community, growth, and interaction could take place.

What is your favorite class you have taken at Graceland and why?
My Enactus Winter Term because we were able to enact change in local business and the community.

The chicken potato bowl.

What is your least favorite thing about your organization and why?
My least favorite thing about COSA is cleaning up after New Years in November!

What is your favorite thing about Graceland and why?
My favorite thing about Graceland is the awesome community and diversified student body, and also the opportunities for leadership and success that are provided for you.

If you could change one thing about Graceland, what would it be and why?
If I could change one thing about Graceland it would be the girls dorms, so that there is more closet space for clothes and shoes!

Brooke Lavery

Brooke GSG

Brooke Lavery, ’14-’15 Speaker of the Senate

What is your organization?
Senate!

What will your classification be next year?
Big Bad Senior

What is your major?
Communications, with a minor in English

What is your house?
Solah

What is your favorite thing about your organization and why?
My favorite thing about Senate is seeing a group of students taking action on campus to make positive changes in the Graceland community.

What is your least favorite thing about your organization and why?
I think my least favorite thing about my organization is that there often seems to be a lack of transparency.  I want students to know that we put a lot of work into things that happen around campus and that they can always use us a resource to figuring out a solution to a problem.

What is your favorite thing about Graceland and why?
My favorite thing about Graceland is the sense of community that is present on campus.  Whether it is being a part of the house system, an athletic team, or just an organization (maybe all three), there is an incredible sense of belonging and I always feel a sense of comfort knowing that I have so many people around to support me.

If you could change one thing about Graceland, what would it be and why?
I might change the location so we didn’t have to wear a winter coat up until April.

What is your favorite class you have taken at Graceland?
This semester I am taking Dialogue: Theory and Practice and Conflict Resolution and I love both of them.  It is with a smaller group of students and I have learned so much about myself by the discussions that we’ve had in class.

What is your favorite food from the Commons?
Lasagna day and gyro day are my favorites!

What is your favorite starter Pokémon (of any generation) and why?
I think I will have to go with Pichu only because it grows up to Pikachu and c’mon everyone loves Pikachu.

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
If I have to choose one my favorite would be Batman.  He has so many different gadgets that would be awesome to use.

What is your favorite word?
This is way too hard.  I have a lot of favorite words.  Chocolate.  Unicorn.  Love.  The list could go on and on.

What is one thing that everyone should know about you?
Everyone should know I am really excited to be a part of GSG next year!

Emily Martz

Emily Martz, '14-'15 Intramurals President

Emily Martz, ’14-’15 Intramurals President

What is your organization?
Intramurals

What will your classification be next year?
Senior

What is your major?
Physical Education

What is your house?
Solah

What is your favorite thing about your organization and why?
Intramurals bring a large part of the Graceland community together through sports activities.  IMs create a fun and competitive atmosphere around campus.  I love seeing smiles on people’s faces when they come to intramural activities.

What is your least favorite thing about your organization and why?
Intramurals can sometimes create bad impressions for houses and I would like to not see that.  I love being competitive, however I believe building a strong, united community is more important.

What is your favorite thing about Graceland and why?
Graceland is my home away from home.  I remember, on my first visit here, how when you walked past someone on the sidewalk they would say hello whether you knew them or not and it made me feel welcomed.  I also love our house system and how it is so different from other colleges and universities.  The house system provides so much community and I enjoy that.

If you could change one thing about Graceland, what would it be and why?
I would make sure there were underground passageways to the buildings when there is inclement weather.  (Kind of Harry Potter style.)

What is your favorite class you have taken at Graceland and why?
My favorite class I have taken is Intro to Education with Michelle Dickey-Kotz.  This class helped me realize I want to be a teacher.  Also, I have a new mentor in Michelle and I appreciate all she does for her students and Graceland.

What is your favorite food from the Commons?
Greek Gyros

What is your favorite starter Pokémon (of any generation) and why?
Pikachu!  I used to collect cards and Pikachu was always my #1 when I would watch the show.

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman!  She is independent, fearless, and will take on anything.

What is your favorite word?
At the moment I would say “perf”!  I don’t know why I have been saying it lately, but I can’t help it.

What is one thing that everyone should know about you?
I love watching movies.  I own over 100 and tend to buy at least 2-3 out of the $5 bin each time I go to Walmart!

Olivia Tubman

Olivia Tubman, '14-'15 ASC President

Olivia Tubman, ’14-’15 ASC President

What is your organization?
Academic Student Council (ASC)

What will your classification be next year?
I’ll be a junior, with senior standing in the classroom.

What is your major?
International Studies

What is your house?
Solah

What is your favorite thing about your organization and why?
I like that ASC functions to help the student body through academic means and pursuits, which is a big part (if not the biggest) of the “Graceland experience.”  I also enjoy working closely with students from the different halls and getting to know them better.

What is your least favorite thing about your organization and why?
ASC acts as the bridge between students and faculty, but I feel that this isn’t what we are known for by the students.  I would love to help make students more aware of what we are capable of doing on their behalf, as well as closing the gap between students and faculty.

What is your favorite thing about Graceland and why?
My favourite thing about Graceland is definitely the sense of community and the unique culture that really makes Graceland what it is.  Being so far away from home myself, I understand just how important this community is.  I’ve really found a second home here at Graceland; I couldn’t have asked for a better college experience!

If you could change one thing about Graceland, what would it be and why?
That’s a tough one!  But I think that if I could change one thing about Graceland, it would be to have more experiential classes or opportunities available for all students, not just those who can afford them.  I feel that experience and service opportunities are equally valuable in a liberal arts education because it would give students the opportunity to physically apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations.  These kinds of opportunities would provide students with a richer and more thorough background in their field of interest and would help to set them apart when applying for jobs post-Graceland.

What is your favorite class you have taken at Graceland and why?
I’ve really enjoyed all of my classes here, but one of my favourites is Intercultural Communications, which I’m currently taking.  Between coming from Canada and my desire to enter into international development, I thought that I knew a lot about culture already.  But this class has certainly changed that.  Susan has really made me question how different cultures coexist and interact with others, and above anything else, she has taught me to stop and think about why people act they way they do before jumping to conclusions.  I’ll be able to apply what I’ve learned here to the rest of my life!

What is your favorite food from the Commons?
Definitely anything to do with breakfast!  If I could, I would probably eat breakfast for every meal of the day.

What is your favorite starter Pokémon (of any generation) and why?
I wish I could say that I know something about Pokémon… but I really don’t.  I love Harry Potter and Star Trek though!

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
Superman, because while he may appear to be invincible and superhuman on the surface, his vulnerability (both in the forms of Kryptonite and Lois Lane) makes him human.

What is your favorite word?
Hope

What is one thing that everyone should know about you?
I’m a fitness nut — when I’m not in the classroom or doing homework, you’ll probably find me either in the Fitz or running around the Bike Trail!
