Time calls this week’s Coliseum Theatre film, Kong: Skull Island, “grand and nutty and visually splendid.” When a scientific expedition to an uncharted island – as beautiful as it is treacherous – awakens titanic forces of nature, a mission of discovery becomes an explosive war between monster and man. Set in 1973, just when the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam, this diverse team of explorers ventures deep into the island unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly star. “The effects are way cool and thunderously exciting. And really, what else do you need to know? Grab your popcorn and strap in for the ride.” (Rolling Stone)
Critic Comments: “The new Kong: Skull Island really gets it right — the exotic adventure, the spectacular special effects, the towering terrors. It’s a big hunk of nostalgic fun, reminding us of the 1933 original even as it monkeys around with the classic story.” (New York Daily News) “If you’re looking for a film that offers pure escapism, Kong: Skull Island should definitely meet expectations.” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) “It’s wildly entertaining and it has a sense of humor about itself.” (Chicago Sun-Times) “This is the best badass gorilla movie since Planet of the Apes films were revitalized with whip-smart intelligence and rip-out-your-windpipe action. It’s chaos and elemental fury, served with clarity, craft, a lot of depth and the added bonus of rambunctious fun.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
Kong: Skull Island will be shown at the Coliseum Theater, 100 North Maple Street, Lamoni on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. It is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for brief strong language. It runs for 118 minutes.
